Thread AI brings governed AI orchestration infrastructure to the U.S. defense ecosystem
NEW YORK, Oct. 8, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Thread AI, a leader in AI orchestration infrastructure, has entered a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the U.S. Army’s DEVCOM Armaments Center to build an AI-powered research and reasoning application for Army engineers and scientists working on Fire Control Systems. The application will be built on Thread AI’s Lemma platform, the dual-use AI orchestration infrastructure trusted by commercial enterprises and defense organizations to run governed, mission-critical AI workflows.

General-purpose AI tools are constrained by their training data and reason poorly across the specialized sources that drive Fire Control Systems research and development (R&D). Surfacing, connecting and reasoning over that dense technical information remains largely slow and manual. Under the CRADA, the two organizations will develop a fast, reliable research and reasoning application built for the specialized technical corpus behind modern weapons systems development.
“Fire control R&D rests on decades of highly specialized technical work – the kind of corpus no general-purpose model has been trained on,” said Colin Bell, AI Strategy at Thread AI. “The challenge isn’t the model, it’s the orchestration around it: giving researchers a way to reason across those sources and trace every answer back to where it came from. That’s the layer Lemma provides, and it’s what makes AI usable in a production research environment.”
The application is designed to let researchers reason over and synthesize complex technical resources at a faster pace than previously possible. By ensuring traceability and controlled access, it is intended to reduce the time to move from question to answer in applied research, while maintaining strict security.
“Governed, production-ready AI is no longer the constraint in critical operations. The bottleneck now is whether the infrastructure around it is mission-ready. We’re building that infrastructure now for one of the most demanding R&D environments there is,” said Angela McNeal, co-founder and CEO of Thread AI. “Composable infrastructure like our platform Lemma is what enables deployment at commercial pace to support the Department of Defense’s AI-first mandate – without compromising on mission security or control postures.”
The CRADA marks Thread AI’s formal expansion into federal and defense work. After successfully deploying in highly-regulated enterprises across multiple industries, this evolution demonstrates Lemma’s ability to apply the same governed infrastructure in some of the most demanding environments in the world.
